Garda Lake, located in the North of Italy, has been considered a highly-desirable-resort area since Roman times. It is a center of culture, cuisine, craftsmanship, scenic beauty, and tourism where diverse culinary traditions and incomparable artistic standards prevail. Its viticulture goes back to pre-Roman times where prestigious wines were and are produced. This are highlights the unique Mediterranean and Alpine flavors which still contribute to the fascination of this colorful cultural spot in Europe. Ongoing and recent Roman era archeological studies have provided more historical evidence that the high culture, buildings and industry in this area were active and a center of trade since those times and are a foundational element in the surrounding traditional communities like Desenzano and Sirmione. The artwork being discovered and studied spans 700 years of exemplary culture.
Historic preservation and mural conservation experts have recently discovered attractive murals from the early 1600s housed in a church community next to a medieval fortress located here. These murals reflect the genius of Venetian artistry and were primarily found in the ancient town of Lonato del Garda. These are, without doubt, part of the beginning of the genius of Baroque illusion that continued to influence affresco paintings in palaces, churches and public buildings in all of Europe for the next 150 years.
Scott M. Haskins, a resident of Los Angeles, is responsible for this amazing project’s technical and media consulting. He received his training in Italy 45 years ago and works as a Principle at Fine Art Conservation Laboratories - a firm that handles the restoration matters of many interesting and important public art projects (805 564 3438 office, faclartdoc@gmail.com).
He has been associated with several prominent art restoration projects in Northern Italy since 1975. He takes pride in serving this renowned project to rediscover 900 years of masterpiece quality murals that even the local public is unaware of.
The project in progress is the community complex of M. del Corlo in Lonato del Garda where Venetian influenced affrescos and decorative stucco work are slowly being conserved and studied. The preservation and professional restoration of the artworks have taken years. The style and quality of these murals are influenced by Venice’s most famous master artist, Tintoretto, who redefined mural painting in this region of Italy 50 years earlier. The new technology of illusion and perspective is what immediately impresses the visitor, however. Art historians and art conservators have diligently worked the walls of this community center to uncover the artistic masterpieces that have been covered in layers of overpainting that have concealed some of the murals and amazing stucco reliefs for centuries.
Ask how you, your family, your organization can have a long lasting, historical influence on, and be recognized for, the art history and historic preservation in this north Italian, Garda Lake region and gain special access for visits, tours, and access to local food products.
Sandra Ragazzoni - an Italian painting conservator, and Luisa Pari (39 329 0116712 lu.luisapari@gmail.com) lead the art conservation team to preserve these ancient murals in the Church of Santa Maria del Corlo. Scott M. Hawkins - a painting and mural conservator from the USA, is also a prominent part of this conservation team. He serves as a consultant and troubleshooting for the project (805 564 3438 office, faclartdoc@gmail.com).
